About Brow Unique

As a keen amateur artist with a love for makeup, I established Brow Unique in 2020 after obtaining a VTCT Level 4 in Microblading; the highest qualification in the field. Excited beyond belief at being able to combine two loves in to a business, my goal was to create a Permanent Makeup Clinic that offers the very best treatments this industry has to offer, in a relaxed and comfortable setting.

Originally set up as an in-home clinic in my Surrey home, I relocated my family and business in 2022 to the picturesque village of Lindfield, West Sussex, close to where I grew up.

In spring 2022 I undertook a further Permanent Makeup qualification in machine brows & lips, training directly with one of the industry's top Permanent Makeup Artists, worldwide trainer Alex Mechenici. Under Alex's continued mentoring, I am constantly looking to develop my skills, undertaking masterclasses to extend the techniques I can offer my clients, while developing my existing skillsets further.

Safety, quality, ethically sourced products and sustainability are all things that I will never compromise on. I only ever use the market leading pigments, needle cartridges and products, as well as being paperless wherever possible.

I hope you find my website informative and helpful, giving you plenty of information about the treatments and styles available to you. I also offer free consultations where you can come for a chat about what it is you want to achieve and have all your questions answered. I don't do pushy sales tactics, this is your face and I just give you the information you need to make your decision.

If you have any questions in the meantime, please just give me a call or send me a message and I'll be more than happy to help.

I hope to welcome you soon.

Treatments Explained

Ombré Brows

What are Ombré Brows?

Using a tattoo machine, we dust fine layers of airy pixels across the brow, building them up in stages. Ombré (a french word for shaded) is a powder brow technique used to create 3 main different styles of brow, where an area (or areas) fade softly out, rather than having a solid boarder to the brow. The 3 main ombré styles are:

Classic Ombré - This is where the top edge and front of the brow are faded but the bottom edge is more saturated.

Misty Ombré - This is the softest of the ombré styles and has no defined solid border. This style is very versatile as it can be used to create a natural look, as well as more of a makeup look.

Ombré Fade - This is where the body of the brow has crisp edges and only the fronts are faded. Often seen on countless Instagram reels for years, trends are now moving away from this style and moving more towards Classic & Misty.

Highlights:

• Versatile technique that can be adapted to your preference, be it bold and defined or soft & misty

• Suitable for all skin types

• Healing time of around 7-10 days (depending on age, medications & skin type)

• Results can last anywhere from 12 months to 2+ Years

Done in two stages (two appointments)

• Annual ‘colour boost’ required to keep them looking fresh (see prices)

Healing Process:

Your brows will appear larger and darker for the first couple of days and scabbing is minimal if you follow the aftercare instructions provided. When we refer to scabbing, we aren't talking about as if you had a grazed knee. Instead it will appear more like dry skin. The initial visible healing process takes place between 7-10 days and continues under the surface for approximately 2-4 weeks (depending on age, medications & skin type).

Bold Powder Brows

What are Bold Powder Brows?

Using a tattoo machine, we build layers of colour in the skin. Unlike ombre brows where we fade the fronts of the brows (and sometimes the other edge(s) depending on style) bold powder brows are more saturated and consistent in colour across the whole brow. An excellent technique to use when covering old Permanent Makeup as part of corrections work, but also for those who like full glamour makeup featuring a bold brow.

Highlights:

• Boldest of the brow styles

• Great for daily glamourous makeup wearers

• Suitable for all skin types

• Healing time of around 7-10 days (depending on age, medications & skin type)

• Results can last anywhere from 12 months to 2+ Years

Done in two stages (two appointments)

Hairstroke Nano Brows

What are Hair Stroke Nano Brows?

Using a tattoo machine, hyper-realistic hair 'strokes' are created to mimic the look of real hairs. The most natural of all the styles, this is a great option for those who don't often wear makeup, or those just want a natural look. Unlike Microblading, this technique is suitable for all skin types and heals beautifully soft. In cases where there is none or very sparse natural hair growth in the area, this technique allows you to add shading and to create depth to the brow.

Highlights:

• Most natural of all the brow styles

• Great if you don't wear much makeup or want a natural look

• Excellent solution to those who have little to no natural brow hair

• Suitable for all skin types

• Healing time of around 7-10 days (depending on age, medications & skin type)

• Results can last anywhere from 12 months to 2+ Years

Done in two stages (two appointments)

• Annual ‘colour boost’ required to keep them looking fresh (see prices)

Microblading/Nanoblading

What is Microblading/Nanoblading?

Microblading and Nanoblading are terms used for the same thing. Microblading began in Asia over 30 years ago and over time the industry developed finer and finer blades, which are now sometimes referred to as 'nanoblades' that are single use for safety. The blade is used to make tiny cuts in to the very top-most layer of the dermis. The cuts are known as 'strokes' and are not randomly placed, instead they follow a 'pattern' that compliments your natural hair growth (if there is any). Pigment is then rubbed in to the cuts. This process continues until there are no large gaps remaining. Microblading is the most basic form of Permanent Makeup and has been widely over taken by machine techniques than can offer better results.

Highlights:

• Results can last anywhere from 6 months to 2+ Years

• Shouldn't be done more than twice to prevent scarring and so isn't a long-term solution (see Hairstroke/Nano Brows for a better option)

Who isn’t a good candidate for Microblading:

• Not suitable for oily skin types

• Not advised for mature skin

Why I no longer offer Microblading/Nanoblading:

This industry is always evolving and better practices are developed continually to offer clients the look they want, but performed in a better way. As you will have hopefully seen from the other treatments I offer, Hairstroke/Nano Brows (which are applied using a tattoo machine), are much kinder to the skin than Microblading/Nanoblading. They also produce much more realistic and longer lasting results, as well as being suitable for all skin types. It is for this reason I now offer those looking for a natural look machine Hairstroke/Nano Brows. As Microblading is a familiar term most people have heard of, I keep this treatment on my site and social pages as sometimes it is helpful for people to know more about the treatment and, as a result, discover the better option available to them.

Lip Blush

What is Lip Blush?

Lip Blush is performed by using a tattoo machine to create a dusting of colour across the entire lip. It is a very versatile technique and can be a great solution for those who have lost colour due to fillers or age, as well as create the appearance of fuller lips and address minor asymmetry, which is done by incorporating the vermillion border in to the shape we create. We also use this technique to correct very cool/purple lips that may clash with your overall complexion, draining your face of colour. This style is great for those who wear makeup, but can also be done using natural colours for those who do not often wear makeup.

Highlights:

• Defines lips

• Very versatile and can be done as natural or makeup style

• Corrects uneven lip pigmentation and loss of vermillion boarder/outline of lip

• Suitable for most skin types

• Results can last anywhere from 12 months to 2+ Years

Done in two stages (two appointments)

• Annual ‘colour boost’ required to keep them looking fresh (see prices)

Healing Process:

Your lips will appear more vivid for the first week or so and scabbing is minimal if you follow the aftercare instructions provided. When we refer to scabbing, we aren't talking about as if you had a grazed knee. Instead it will appear more like dry skin. The initial visible healing process takes place between 5-7 days and continues under the surface for approximately 6 weeks (depending on age, medications & skin type). The full colour is not visible until 6 weeks post-treatment.

Lipstick Effect Lip Blush

What is Lipstick Effect Lip Blush?

Lipstick effect is the boldest of the lip styles and is done by saturating the lips with even more colour, creating the apperance of lipstick. It has all the benefits of regular Lip Blush in the way it can help define lips, correct minor asymmetry and very vascular/cool lips too. This style is great for those who wear a full face of makeup including lipstick or lip gloss every day. We can colour match your favourite lipstick/gloss, or we can come up with a bespoke blend together that compliments your skin tone. The best bit is it's non-transferable! No more lipstick on teeth or clothes and you can do as much kissing as you like and it's going nowhere! All you'll need is some lip balm or clear gloss and you're good to go!

Highlights:

• Defines lips

• Great if you wear full makeup daily

• Suitable for most skin types

• Results can last anywhere from 12 months to 2+ Years

Done in two stages (two appointments)

• Annual ‘colour boost’ required to keep them looking fresh (see prices)

Ombré Lip Blush

What are Ombré Lips?

Performed using a tattoo machine, Ombré Lip Blush is achieved by building more colour on the outer edges of the lips and gradually fading towards the water line (inner edge of the lip). This is a beautiful makeup style in its own right, but it is also used as a replacement to what is now considered an outdated practice of tattooing lip liner. Just as with regular Lip Blush & Lipstick Effect Lip Blush, this style can be used to correct slight asymmetry as well as patchy lips and lips that need redefining.

Highlights:

• Defines lips

• Corrects uneven lip pigmentation

• Suitable for most skin types

• Results can last anywhere from 12 months to 2+ Years

What Happens at a Free Consultation?

Your free consultation will take around 20-30mins and is absolutely not a sales pitch! It is a chance for you to meet with me to discuss what you'd like to achieve and to have any questions you might have answered.

I will talk through the styles that I think fit best and give you more information about what you can expect on treatment day. If it is a brow treatment that you are looking to have done, it is best to come without brow makeup up on. This is so that I can see what hair growth you might have (and in the case of corrections and cover ups what pigment is remaining).

If you do decide that Permanent Makeup is for you and you'd like to book, I take a 50% deposit to secure your treatment appointment. This can be via cash, card, bank transfer or payment link. It doesn't have to be booked then and there either, you can go away and think about it and contact me if and when you're ready. If you do think you might be interested, I will conduct a patch test behind your ear to check for any obvious allergies that you might have to the products I use, that way you are all set and ready should you wish to book in.

The 50% deposit is fully refundable (provided at least 48hrs is provided prior to your appointment start time). The remaining balance is due at your first treatment appointment (please see prices for further details).

Aesthetics Collaboration with Katy Alice Aesthetics

The collaboration between Brow Unique & Katy Alice Aesthetics began in early 2023.

Both myself & Katy sought each other out after following the others work for some time. We are both asked frequently if we know someone who does Permanent Makeup/Aesthetics and we each wanted to be able to recommend someone that we trust to our clients. We also decided we wanted to offer clients who see both of us a discount and this comes in the form of our collaborative packages. These packages pair the most requested combinations between the Permanent Makeup world, and the Aesthetics world. Details of these can be found below, but first, let me tell you more about Katy.

Cancellation Policy

As I am sure you're already aware, as a small business late cancellations cost us a lot of money in time lost, therefore a cancellation policy is what we must have in place to protect against loss of earnings.

Brow Unique's cancellation policy therefore is as follows:

We require at least 48hrs notice prior to your appointment start time for any changes or cancellations. After this time, no refund shall be given.

In the case of 'top-up' treatments (second treatment appointments) which have a £0 cost attached, we do still require 48hrs notice to change or cancel an appointment. This is to allow us to reallocate the time to another client. In the case of late cancellation for these appointments, a £65 late cancellation fee will be payable before you are able to reschedule in your 'top-up' treatment.

Thank you for your understanding and for supporting my small, independent business!

Cotton Field

Aftercare

One of the most important factors in Permanent Makeup is the correct aftercare treatment.

Whether you are having an eyebrow procedure, or a lip procedure, the success of the treatment is heavily reliant on the advice being followed fully in the days, weeks, months & even years following treatment.

The aftercare journey starts straight away, initially focused on allowing your skin to heal without introducing infection, preventing scarring by not picking or itching the area, and allowing your skin time to heal.

In the months & years after your procedure, the main goal shifts to keeping the pigment looking as good as possible, for as long as possible! For example, sunlight breaks down the pigment particles, so it is essential you protect your skin with an SPF as part of your daily routine.

The aftercare advice is different depending on which procedure you are having, so please ensure you follow the correct aftercare.

I will send you a copy of your aftercare leaflet by email/what's app (as I look to be as paperless as possible) but you can also find the aftercare advice for each treatment here, and as always, if there is something you are unsure of, worried about, or need clarification on, please contact me. I am always here to help.

Pile of Wooden Cubes with Question Marks

FAQ's

What is the difference between Permanent & Semi-Permanent Makeup?

There is no difference between the two. It is purely the preference of the Artist as to what they choose to refer to it as. Both are accepted terms within the industry, although Permanent Makeup (PMU) is the most widely used around the world.

I prefer to use the term 'Permanent Makeup', as it is more accurate. The pigments used in the procedure, however you refer to it, does stay in the skin indefinitely in some form, even once faded..

Is it painful and do you use numbing?

This is something I get asked a lot, and it is a hard one to answer as pain is subjective and different for everyone. What I can tell you is that most of my clients only report it to be mildly uncomfortable, and that is only for the first 'pass', as after that I use numbing. I have had clients fall asleep during both brow & lip treatments, so that tells you a lot, I think!

It is also worth mentioning that those who have had Microblading or a traditional tattoo previously have all reported that it is far less painful and hardly comparable.

Why don't you pre-numb?

The reason why I don't pre-numb before the treatment is that your skin is like a sponge. It can only absorb so much. All pre-numbing treatments attract water to the area, causing slight swelling. If your skin is swollen and full of water when we begin, this will limit the amount of pigment that can be absorbed and therefore impact on your healed result. The first pass doesn't take long, so it is minimal time The kind of numbing I use doesn't attract water or cause swelling, but it can only be applied to "broken" skin.

Can I have a lip treatment if I suffer from coldsores?

This depends really on whether or not you are happy to take the risks involved? Having a lip tattoo can sometimes trigger an outbreak following the treatment. This can be anything from mild to severe, and there is no real way of telling beforehand how your body will react to the treatment. The treatment can even stimulate a dormant herpes virus that has never previously caused you to have a coldsore before, so that is worth noting too. And any outbreak that you may have, could effect the healed result of your treatment.

That being said, if you have had coldsores previously, it is still your choice as to whether you'd like to go ahead with the treatment. If you would still like to go ahead, you will need to obtain some herpes-suppressing medication from your doctor or pharmacist that can help in controlling any outbreak. For this medication to work, you must take it for 5 full days prior to EVERY treatment and 5 full days after.

If you have any further questions about this, please don't hesitate to get in touch and I can provide further details.

Can I go on holiday straight after having a Permanent Makeup procedure?

This is a tricky one, because it really depends on what kind of holiday it is.! Until your skin has fully healed (4-8 weeks) you should not expose the area to extreme heat (direct sunlight for example) or extreme cold (ski holidays for example). If you are going on a beach holiday, do you want to be restricted by not being able to swim? Sweating is also a big no-no in the first 7-10 days. So if you are planning a Permanent Makeup procedure and you have imminent holiday plans, it might be best to wait until you are home instead.

Can I go swimming or in a hot tub/jacuzzi?

Not in the initial healing period of 7-10 days (or until any scabs have fully healed and fallen away by themselves. After this phase, you can go swimming and use hot tubs/jacuzzis, however you must protect your permanent makeup from the harsh chemicals. You can do this by applying a layer of Vaseline to the area, using a new, unopened pot and applying it with a clean cotton pad.

When can I go to the gym or do exercise?

For brow treatments, after the first 7-10 days, or when any scabs have fallen away by themselves, all redness has disappeared, and new skin has formed. For lip treatments you should avoid for one week ideally.

Do you shave my eyebrow off to do a brow treatment?

This might sound ridiculous to some, but I have been asked this question multiple times and I'm not quite sure where this misinformation came from for sure, but I do have a theory. But I will begin by reassuring you that no, we do not shave your brows off to perform the treatment! Quite the opposite actually, we try to incorporate and preserve as much of your natural brow hair as possible, this is for two reasons. One is that we don't want to give you much or any maintenance and two is that over plucking can result in the hair follicles dying. Natural hair can add depth and realism to your brows and the style you choose now might differ from what you want in 20 years time.. We are very much here to give you brows, not take them away!

My theory as to where this comes from is that sometimes there are videos on social media platforms showing a massive transformation from no brows to brows, and in particular microblading videos showing a crisp pattern of hair strokes freshly done. These videos tend to do very well, but the reason for the lack of natural hair is not because they have been shaved. It can be because the client has no brows through conditions such as alopecia.
